Built in 1967 to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide which started on April 24th, 1915.
The monument consists of two parts: one is a high pillar and the other is a circle of lower walls in the center of which there is an eternal fire. Every year, on April 24th, many Armenians and foreigners visit this memorial and bring flowers.
The two parts of the monument have been interpreted by different people. Some claim that they represent the eastern and western parts of Armenia; others believe those are the Aratat mountains - Great and Little one. Next to the memorial there is also a museum on the Genocide of Armenians in Turkey.
