In this case the meaning of the memorial changed significantly over time. While it was a statement of victory and respect for Joe Paterno in the beginning, when the Penn State scandal was unearthed it was deemed appropriate to tear the statue down. That is, the university decided that revering this man was no longer acceptable. In tearing it down, they created a very literal counter-monument that memorializes, in my eyes, the victims of the scandal.
